August update: 11 month survivorship
August marks 11 months since chemotherapy — and a new chapter for a 34-year-old breast cancer survivor. Through art, healing and everything in between, she’s finding her way forward.

Dear Art Lovers and Friends,
As August rolls in, I find myself reflecting on the journey I’ve taken as a 34-year-old breast cancer survivor. It feels surreal to think back on the last 11 months, filled with daunting treatments and the emotional rollercoaster that comes with them. I’ve somewhat emerged 'on the other side', yet I often still feel the shadows of the past looming over me. Each day brings its own challenges, but I am determined to share my progress, however imperfect it might be. My hair is starting to grow back, semi mullet, uneven, and curly! It feels like a real reflection of my health progress!
Navigating hormone therapy
Continuing with my hormone therapy has been a mixed bag of emotions and side effects. Some days, I feel empowered knowing I am doing everything I can to prevent a recurrence of cancer. Other days, the reality of the side effects hits hard. Hot flashes, mood swings, extreme joint pain, and fatigue have become uninvited companions in my daily life.
At times I question whether it's "fair" to have to be on these medications for the next 10 years, then I need to remind myself that not everyone reaches this point on their journey as Cancer can be cruel.
Reintegrating into the new but not normal
Reintroducing myself into what I once called "normal" life feels less like a smooth transition and more like a series of hurdles to jump over. Socialising with family and friends who are blissfully unaware of the struggles I face sometimes feels overwhelming. I grapple with the shifting dynamics of relationships and my new self-image after a double mastectomy and reconstruction, rushed IVF, chemotherapy, monthly ovarian suppression and big ass needles (thanks Zoladex), and my ongoing hormone therapy. My body bears the scars, both visible and invisible, and while I am proud of my journey, I sometimes miss the woman I used to be.
Embracing my new body doesn’t mean I have to love every scar or feel great every day. Instead, it’s about recognising the strength and resilience that come with survival.
Ultimately, this August update is about authenticity. It’s about being real with myself and others about where I am in my journey. The road ahead may still be rocky, but I am learning to navigate it with grace, my raw dark humour, and my non linear supply of hope. Here’s to facing challenges head-on and embracing the new me, one day at a time.
Thanks for visiting my little corner of the internet and I hope to connect with you soon.
