Zoledronic acid is a medication that's used to strengthen bones and reduce the risk of fractures. For many individuals, particularly those at risk of bone loss or certain cancers, receiving this treatment is essential.
I've been prescribed this treatment twice a year for three years in hopes that it solidifies my bones, making them less susceptible to damage as I am on long term medication and my body has taken a beating from multiple doses of chemotherapy. However, as I recently discovered, the journey to this crucial appointment can be anything but smooth. I received mine via IV.
Hours after the infusion, I experienced some awful side effects, which included flu-like symptoms, fatigue, chills, a fever and throbbing muscles with serious bone aches. Deals with side effects are part and parcel of this treatment, yet they can really throw off your day. This experience made me wonder: is it really worth it? It almost reminded me of a "mini chemo" although each chemo dose was nine days of hell.
Despite the hassle and discomfort, I remind myself that I’m undergoing this treatment twice a year for a good reason: to strengthen my bones and help prevent any possibility of recurrence. A tough pill to swallow, but one that might ultimately pay off in the long run. It’s essential to listen to your body, do your own research so you can make the right decisions for you and your path. Please also, advocate for yourself if you suffer from a chronic illness, pain and or a disability etc.
